Fijian Drua flyer Ilaisa Droasese caught the eye with an outstanding try in his side’s 50-17 defeat to the Chiefs in their Super Rugby Pacific clash in Hamilton on Friday.

With the home side on the attack deep inside their opponents’ half in the 46th minute, the Drua won a turnover when Apisalome Vota ripped the ball from Samisoni Taukei’aho’s grasp.

The ball was then shifted to Droasese, who set off on an attacking run from inside his 22.

Midway between the halfway line and the Chiefs‘ 22 he threw an inside pass to Joseva Tamani, who was brought to ground close to the Chiefs’ try-line but he managed to free his arms and offloaded to the on-rushing Droasese, who crossed the whitewash for an excellent score.

Prior to that, it was all Chiefs as they raced into a 31-12 lead at half-time. Despite atrocious weather conditions, with heavy rain pelting down throughout, both sides stayed true to their attacking roots and there was plenty of end-to-end action for long periods.

The home side raced into a 14-0 lead inside the first 10 minutes, courtesy of tries from Cortez Ratima and Shaun Stevenson, which were both converted by Damian McKenzie, before the visitors opened their account via a Elia Canakaivata five-pointer with Teti Tela adding the extras.

Kaylum Boshier and McKenzie then crossed the whitewash before Michael Naitokani scored the Drua’s second try, but the Chiefs finished stronger with Taukei’aho crossing for their fifth try shortly before the interval.

The Drua were fastest out of the blocks in the second half and narrowed the gap with Droasese’s try but the Chiefs retained their unbeaten start in Super Rugby Pacific when tries from Brodie Retallick, Tupou Vaa’i and Etene Nanai-Seturo clinched their eighth successive victory in the competition.
