Wing Lachie Anderson showed off his athleticism with a stunning finish for the Melbourne Rebels in their 34-27 win over Australian rivals the Waratahs in Super Rugby Pacific.

The Rebels were attacking with rhythm in the Waratahs’ red zone before showing the value of Reece Hodge at outside centre as the Wallaby received a pass from Carter Gordon and dropped it on his boot, sending a grubber in behind.

The ball looked for all money that it was going to roll over the dead ball line but the final bounce popped up and lingered for a flying Anderson to gather and ground it just in the field of play to score an outrageous try.

Meanwhile, earlier on, the Waratahs were first on the board courtesy of a Tane Edmed penalty in the ninth minute before a period where the teams were still feeling their way into the game.

The lull was ended by a beautiful try by Hodge who collected a chip in behind to score near the posts – he would convert his own try. Only three minutes later, Anderson would have his moment with the visitors leaving space behind their defensive line.

Edmed added another penalty before robust Rebels number eight Richard Hardwick would also get in on the action with a try of his own six minutes before half-time as the hosts took the momentum into the break.

Importantly for the Waratahs, they struck first in the second period through Wallaby Mark Nawaqanitawase, with Edmed adding the extras. The visitors scored again 10 minutes later through a converted Charlie Gamble try.

The Rebels responded to the Waratahs’ surge with two quick tries through an outrageous Matt Gibbon score as well as playmaker Gordon diving over under the sticks. Hodge converted both tries and added a penalty in the 74th minute to keep the visitors at arm’s length.

Taleni Seu would score a consolation try for the Waratahs in the 80th minute, with Edmed adding two points from the tee to earn his side a losing bonus point.
