Welsh rugby set to experiment with a new points scoring system

WORLD RUGBY HAVE given the go-ahead to the Welsh Rugby Union to experiment with a new points scoring system in their domestic league.

The Principality Premiership will trial a new system of increasing a try from five to six points, while reducing all kicks to two points, in a bid to increase attacking rugby.

The trial is expected to be formally announced tomorrow, and could be in place for the opening rounds of the Welsh Premiership season this weekend.

As part of the experimental scoring system, all penalty tries will automatically count as eight points.

Speaking on BBC Radio Wales, Neath head coach and former Welsh international Gareth Llewellyn says it’s hoped that the new points system will put a greater value on tries, speed the game up, with less kicking at goal.

“Teams will kick into the corner and you can score tries from driving line-outs.

“I’m not sure it will change the game that much, just make it a bit more positive in the scoring zone so people will not just take two points when you can get eight for a converted try.”
