Here at Vogue we’re fascinated by the science behind the British royal family’s wardrobes. From Queen Elizabeth II to the Duchess of Cambridge, unpacking the sartorial choices of our favourite royals is something we take quite seriously. So it was welcome news to read that you can now study the phenomenon of the royal wardrobe at university.
The University of Glasgow is offering a free course titled A History of Royal Fashion. As per the university’s website, the course will take you “into the wardrobes of British kings and queens across five royal dynasties from the Tudors, Stuarts and Georgians to the Victorians and Windsors.”
Yes–that means in the final week, you’ll study the Windsors, which will include a class on the likes of Princess Diana, Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton. “Welcome to the 20th century where the Windsors balance royal fashion with diplomacy and expectations in an era of mass media and celebrity,” the website says.
The best bit? It’s a free online course which only takes five weeks and considering you probably spent the last five weeks on Instagram looking at pictures of your favourite duchesses anyway, why not get a certificate that says you’re an expert in it?
The program is in collaboration with the charity Historic Royal Palaces, which looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle.
As for the professors, they include experts like dress and textile lecturer Sally Tuckett and royal museum curators Eleri Lynn and Matthew Storey.
Unfortunately the most recent course just concluded – it kicked off on June 24. However, you can visit the university website here to check in on future enrollment details.
This is definitely one class that we feel like we can achieve an A+ in.
